Cali Sales was born in Los Angeles, California in 1990, and grew up in Austin, Texas. She was inspired from a very young age to create imagery, whether it be through sculpture, painting or drawing. In 2009, she left Texas to pursue a BFA in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. She graduated in 2012, and in 2013, moved to Brooklyn, New York where she currently lives and works as a freelance artist and illustrator.
Cali Sales always felt quite lonely growing up, as if she were looking at the world from the outside. However, she found that this provided her with a unique perspective, especially in relation to how she observed people around her. She is fascinated by people— the way that they dress, think, feel, and their individual stories. She processes these observations, along with observations of her personal experiences, through the work she creates.
Cali explores themes of isolation, individuality, and sensitivity using color relationships, intricate patterns, symbols, and the motif of the lone figure. She is interested in the concept of seeing and being seen, not just as a person, but as someone that is also navigating the world as a woman. Her work is a way for her to understand and process the way she feels, but she hopes for it to also serve as a mirror for the viewer to see a bit of themselves.
