What You Can Do About Gun Control

Emma Gonzalez, a student at the Parkland, Florida high school where 17 people were left dead after a mass shooting, calls out President Trump and the NRA by name at an anti-gun rally.

If the 2016 election taught us anything, it was that your voice counts.

The latest mass shooting in America:

Parkland, FL.  17 dead.

We can put a stop to the more than 35,000 gun deaths that happen every year. And we can do it in a way that still respects the Second Amendment for those who think that gun control means we want to take all the guns. Ever. Forever.

We've rounded up some ways to make your voice heard and help the fight against the NRA.

1. Resistbot

Resistbot is a fast and easy tool that allows you to quickly contact your elected officials using Text (SMS) or Facebook Messenger. Click here to learn more.

2. Call your member of Congress

You can find out who represents you in Congress by clicking here.

When you call, tell them that you are a constituent and that you vote for candidates that make gun reform a priority and that you expect strong action on common-sense gun reforms like Universal Background Checks. Tell them what you think. They're there to represent YOU.

3. Facebook your prepresentatives

Find your representative on facebook and send them a message. Yes, it's that easy.

Write something like: Dear Representative, I am your constituent and I vote. I am horrified by the gun violence epidemic in America and want action now. I want to see legislation supporting Universal Background Checks on all gun sales.

3. Tweet your representatives

Yes - it's that easy.

Don't know their twitter handle?  Click here.

Take a deep breath and express yourself freely.

Then delete all the !@#$%^&* even though we know you want to keep it (we do too) and write something like: "Dear @POTUS Enough gun violence in America! Enough NRA bribery! We need Universal Background Checks now!"

4. Learn more about guns in America

By now, you definitely know that the NRA has a ton of money and they've spent decades buying the government votes to keep guns easily available...so they can make more money. These are people who do not care how many people die if they keep making millions.

Check out the following:

5. Contact your state and local representatives (yes, again)

Find out who your reps are.  Use this website to help.

Call them up and let them know you are a constituent, that you expect strong gun reforms to protect American lives, that you vote and that you expect action.

Email them.

Post on their Facebook page.

Tweet them.

6. Join a local voter registration drive

What do politicians care about?

Votes and money.

If you want to donate to the representatives who want to impose strict gun control laws, that's great! Please do.

If you don't have that luxury - vote! (And vote if you do have that luxury as well).

Join an organization that works to register voters who care about gun reform.

7. Register to vote and then ACTUALLY VOTE!

The NRA has 5 million members and the NRA tells them who to vote for. And they do it.

NRA also bribes political candidates. Yes, some Democrats too.

Make sure you register to vote! AND VOTE! We don't want to hear any "do you really believe that my one voice counts, who cares?" whining. Yes, your one voice counts.

8. Share information about gun violence with your friends and family in person and on social media

Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

By educating those around you, you may change the way they see the world. They may do the same with others.
